Services Offered

For Patients:

Individual Psychotherapy:
Individual Psychotherapy is designed to provide you with regular appointments with your psychotherapist scheduled over a period of time. I will help you to work on a problem of your choice that falls within my area of expertise. Click here to see a list of areas I can help you with. Typical goals for individual psychotherapy might be improving mood, decreasing feelings of low self-esteem, improved sense of self-worth, decreased anxiety, improved relationships, and changing habits. These sessions are designed for individuals who which to overcome their challenges without medications, or who receive medications from another provider.
These appointments can range from 50min to 2.5 hours, and can be scheduled two to three times per week, to every two weeks depending upon your situation. You may want to have longer and more frequent visits at the beginning and find yourself more comfortable spacing the visits out to longer intervals as time passes, your symptoms decrease, and your mastery improves.
Consultations/Second Opinions:
Medicine, including psychiatry and psychotherapy, is an art and a science. Our understanding of the human mind continues to develop, and the approach to treatment can vary from provider to provider. Often a consumer will find a surgeon recommends surgery and a naturopath offers a naturopathic remedy. I believe each individual is ultimately in charge of and in control of his or her own health and healthcare, through the variety of daily choices he/she makes, and his/her ability to seek out information on available treatment approaches. As a physician and therapist, I feel my role is to provide information, education, and a professional perspective to assist the individual in balancing the risks and benefits of each treatment approach.
You or another health care professional may want a second opinion on diagnosis, or treatment options. Often a second opinion may be requested by a prescriber, therapist, professional, or an individual him/herself to help clarify the diagnosis, treatment options, and to get a different perspective on the issues and options. These services are available to an individual at the request of their psychiatrist, primary care physician, or mental health professional, with the specific request in writing. Alternatively an individual new to treatment might seek a consultation in order to gather information on the options available to them. Suggestions may include medication recommendations, therapy recommendations, or medical work-up recommendations. Dr. Harrington is familiar with psychiatric medications, prescribing, risks and benefits of various medications, as well as non-pharmaceutical approaches, but does not prescribe medications in her private practice. Thus an individual interested in receiving medications would need to show they have an existing relationship with a prescriber who is comfortable with prescribing psychiatric medications.
Intensive Psychotherapy or Intensive Personal Mastery
If you want results quickly and are willing to devote significant energy, Intensive Psychotherapy or Intensive Personal Mastery might be your solution. This approach is ideal for those who want to accelerate their results into a brief time frame. If you are travelling from a distance and want to dedicate a weekend to two weeks to your success this is the program for you (please send a consultation request from your current psychotherapist). Sessions can be scheduled for 2.5 hours one to three times per day over the course of 2-14 days. Homework is done between sessions, which accelerates your progress. The goal is that this focused approach of immersion will help you achieve mastery in a shortened period of time. Assignments may be given prior to arrival. You may also chose this approach if you are local, but would like to accelerate your results.

For Therapists and Colleagues:

Individual or Small Group Supervision in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
If you want to improve your skills in CBT, and would like to share the costs and enjoy the support and camaraderie of others dedicated to excellent clinical skills you may choose to do small group supervision. These sessions are focused on developing specific skills in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and practicing them, according to the T.E.A.M.* model of CBT. Group size is limited, thus there may be a wait for these groups.

If you would like one-on-one supervision with hands on practice in the TEAM model, this can also be arranged and can be quite rewarding.
*Note the T.E.A.M. model of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was developed by and continues to be developed by Dr. David Burns. For more information on Dr. Burns, and to learn how to attend one of his live workshops, visit to www.FeelingGood.com or www.IAHB.com
Case Consultation
You may not be interested in ongoing supervision, but might be stuck on a specific case, or have a specific question on a case. It can be helpful to discuss a case with a colleague. Please get permission from the patient prior to presenting to me. I am able to consult with you on medication approaches, cognitive behavioral therapy, and approaches to motivation and resistance issues for therapists and psychiatrists.
Consultation for Primary Care Providers and other Medical Specialists
As a primary care provider or medical specialist, you may be asked to manage psychiatric conditions at an increased rate, along with the wide variety of other conditions you treat. It can be helpful to discuss with a psychiatrist a specific question regarding a patient with psychiatric illness. As a primary care provider or medical specialist you are also called on to manage interpersonal relationships with patients, colleagues, staff, and potentially supervisors and insurance companies. I can assist with consultation or training in any of these areas, or in stress management for you and/or your staff.

New Patients:

What to expect before and at my first appointment, and how to get the most out of my time with Dr. Harrington
First Dr. Harrington will send you a number of assessment instruments, which will screen for potential psychiatric issues. If you are interested in personal growth or personal mastery, you will also receive these. It is helpful to complete these even if they do not indicate a specific diagnosis, as they are quite sensitive and can pick up the very small issues that are holding you back from excellence even though they do not reach diagnostic significance. If you do believe you are suffering from a psychiatric illness, these assessment instruments will help to clarify the issues, and allow us to spend more time overcoming them.
At the very first session Dr. Harrington will check on your level of positive and negative feelings at that moment. She will then review the assessment instruments, take time to learn what you would like help with and explain what the approach will be. The first two sessions will be information gathering, and a decision will be made following those sessions if both parties are comfortable moving forward and have a shared idea of how to approach your challenge(s).
Homework will be assigned between sessions and will be crucial to your mastery and success in overcoming self-defeating beliefs and behaviors.
For the General Public:

For the general public, family, friends, and self-help groups: Dr. Harrington is available to speak to your group on a number of topics related to emotional wellbeing, including relationships, habits/addictions, stress, personal growth, anxiety, depression and self-esteem.

Individual Psychoeducational Consultation or Medical System Consultation:
Often, we have a loved one who is suffering, and we don’t know how to help, or how to understand what is going on for that person. Also, navigating the medical system in the United States can be a mystery for those who are not working in the field. Those who are interested in a psychoeducational session to understand more about mental illness, or about navigating the medical system for a loved one with mental illness or medical illness can schedule an educational session to help themselves with their own understanding and advocacy. Please note that I cannot treat any individual I have not met, and these type of meetings are not meant to establish a doctor-patient relationship or provide treatment, but to provide education and understanding to the individual(s) present at the appointment.
